Making The Right Choice In Maternity Baby Products

By Michael Clark

Before I got pregnant, I never spent more than two minutes worrying about the ingredients of products and environment. It was not that I did not care about the earth, I just never thought about it. I was young, and busy, and I had many other things on my mind. Having a baby really does change everything. The earth was going to be my baby's home. I realized that I wanted it to be a safe, healthy place. I started changing my lifestyle in order to be greener. I also started doing research on environment issues, and I discovered that most baby products are not really safe for infants.

Right before I gave birth, I read an article about how dangerous some baby products can be. Baby products is frequently made by manufactures that do not care about safety or environmental sustainability. Harmful dyes and dangerous chemicals are frequently used in the manufacture of baby products. Although these chemicals are not good for anyone, they are particularly bad for infants. Infants have delicate skin that absorbs chemicals more easily than adult skin does.

Some of my friends were so worried about chemicals in baby products that they were purchasing organic materials and making baby products themselves. I knew that this was not a solution that would work for me. First of all, I do not even know how to sew. Secondly, I knew that once the baby arrives I would no longer have time to sew anything.

Obvious, natural and organic ingredients in body, skin and hair products are better for the tender skin of a baby, and everyone else. Mineral oil or petroleum products in massage oil and body lotions and harsh detergents and surfactants in bath gels and shampoo, can be very irritating. For outdoor protection, sunscreen can also be made with natural ingredients. Harsh chemicals that damage skin are not necessary.

I made a list of features that I wanted my baby's clothing and products to have. I wanted it to be made in a way that was sustainable, I wanted it to be free of harmful chemicals, and I wanted it to be comfortable. I started looking both online and in stores. I eventually found some great brands that met all of my requirements. Good, safe baby products are out there. You just need to look for them.
